Dump Digging…

The hobby of Treasure Hunting has many facets & one, that was popular many years ago was dump digging which produces everyday rubbish from households, this rubbish was taken out of the towns & cities by either horse & cart or barges, or maybe straight to the dockside by the horse & cart, ready to be loaded onto the waiting boats etc;

These were then emptied into landfill sites, & alongside canals or river estuaries…

Although Dump Digging is not as popular now, as it was many years ago, it still flourishes today, all be it on a much smaller scale…
From all of the rubbish in a dump, it seems that pot lids & bottles are the favorites to find, its also these two that can age a rubbish dump more accurately than any other item, as each layer of rubbish can produce a dateable source through these items…

Most, if not all rubbish dumps in cities and towns have now been built on and the outskirts of towns and cities are ever under pressure from the developers, but there are still smaller and more isolated places to find these dumps, a lot might have been worked out whilst others might still be untouched, so how do we go about finding our very own dump… if you have done metal detecting then you are already aware of the fact, that surface litter of rubbish might produce an area of a rubbish dump, but failing that…
